Yao money tree

The San Diu ethnic minority in Vietnam often includes money trees in their funeral services. This practice is deeply rooted in ancient China, where money trees were important funeral items and were buried in tombs of the elite during the Han dynasty (25-220 CE).
The basic money tree consists of 3 levels formed by branches, with “leaves” that imitate ancient Chinese coins. These levels represent mountains that the souls of the dead must climb to reach the summit of immortality. The money tree is also a symbol of rebirth and eternal life for the dead. This meaning is connected with demigod Yao, who had in his garden the Portent Plant, on which each leaf grows for 15 days, before being shed for another to grow; thus it was called a “calendar petal”. Deeply embedded with many profound meanings, the money tree is an integral component of the shaman’s ritual tools.
